Weekend Recovery, ‘Esoteric’, 2023 album

Third time plucky. TheZineUK tapestry tale of emerging scenes would not be the same without this musical golden thread.

‘Esoteric’ by Weekend Recovery

The alternative rock trio have just released their third album on Criminal Records and it would be a crime for you not to give it a listen.

Download/Stream (and physical!)

In a world where an industry seemingly expects predictable continuity and generica formula, while repeating the word “originality”, Weekend Recovery are a creative clash of ideas and sounds beyond a genre.

FFO?

Well, this makes them "For Fans Of hard working bands that can magnetise a hard core following”. In other words, worth investigating. The definition of the word esoteric is “intended for, or likely to be, understood by only a small number of people with a specialised knowledge or interest”. The sonical crafting of the Weekend Recovery album, ‘Esoteric’, has the potential to loved by even more.

Poetic punch and musical thump, this is pop for now at it’s showy finest.

No wonder the band’s international support/following is building and the number of sold out shows are growing. The first two singles from the record ‘Chemtrails’ (the album opener which hits the ground running) and ’No Guts, All The Glory’ have gained massive support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, Kerrang!, Radio X, Planet Rock, Amazing Radio, Absolute and a swathe of independents - alongside sell out shows on an Arts Council England funded tour.

Lori is a rock star, already

Literally wove into TheZineUK documentary with her solo personality filling the room ofa pub ito the point that a mention was necesssary. Literally remarkable.

Behind the scenes, one of the hardest working women in the DIY sector, she’s also responsible for the future making GhostRoadFest at the end of 2021. Where, yet again, we heard the shout “We love you, Lori”. Check out many a pic down the front with the rocking grrrrrlz in the crowd.

She earns it though. Multi talent tasting woman alert, Lori works hard creating the new. Alongside just under 45 minutes of full length album, Lori has created an accompanying RPG game for android, PC and Apple with 45 hours of immerse game play.

Weekend Recovery, genuine indie rock charters, continue to spiral upwards 2022 to 2023 and have taken things next level with this album. Too many rocking punky women get lazily compared to Debbie Harry, but what happens when ‘In The Crowd’ has “offspring of Blondie” and ‘Rapture’ tones? We call it out, that’s what.

‘Esoteric’ is a smart, funny, observed but above all tuneful and rhythmic album for the world that we live in to escape to. Going to be one of our favourites this year, already. The lower end vocal tones are as powerful as the angelic lighter shades and the take no prisoners lyrical rap bite. Lori has called out the dickbrained slimeweasels in her time. To say the least.

The album’s title track is eyes-closed festival main stage with big lights. ‘The Knife’ is a punkpop classic that helps unashamedly international a factor of this release. It takes a breather for the classically anthemic of ‘Her’. That’s just a three track moment…

Sometimes, documenting the newer wave of thrillpop is a puzzle.

How come so many of our favourite new rock n roll star turns are not on giant stages with global acclaim and support?

But then, consider. think how upside down the last decade really is. Sadfuck hearted criminals running countries, unjailed, applauded and honoured while good souls are crucified. So yeah, why would anything else be inside out?

The beauty of all this, though, is that we can get closer to our fave pop stars. Try it if you can.

Like a best kept secret, living a virtual rock opera of the best soundtracks. It’s not an exclusive clique though, we invite the world to an inclusive, diverse and fun culture/uniqulture of community.

If you love jumping around, grinning and shouting along to punky, having-a-ball, bawl-along favourites then you’re gonna crave experiencing ‘No Guts, All The Glory’

There’s a solar powered energy burning out of this whole album.

‘Esoteric’ has turned the ambition dial up to 11 and deserves any fans and praising accolades, enthusiastic airplay, air punching and playlisting that Weekend Recovery earn.

Chronologically, obviously, but stylistically this time round, it feels like all the tangents and directions that Weekend Recovery’s tale of sounds have travelled in, so far, have come home and gelled on ‘Esoteric’. They’ve got all the guts, they deserve all the glory.
