SMALL MIRACLES. Big Potential.

Small Miracles are being miraculous is a big way.

Based in Cardiff, Small Miracles are a band whose rock n roll genres include ambitious sounds reaching wide possibilities through tangented song crafting, accomplished musicality and lived experiences of articulated strong beliefs.

Their tunes straddle a 20th and 21st century viewed through the modern lens of what passes for reality these days. With anti-celeb panache from punky politica to glam superfurry dreams.

Building a reputation, playing shows, winning fans, screening their documentary of the EP ‘Live At Rockfield’, and it’s creation. Small Miracles are currently working in the studio. Busy band! Much appreciation to them for taking time out for TheZineUK to be a bit nosy…

#TheZineUK : What Gives You Positive Hope?

“Though the current landscape is quite bleak, we find positive hope in the small acts of kindness we encounter day-to-day and the level of political engagement from younger generations.

Musically, the diversification of indie music and the return of weird guitar music to the mainstream makes us feel better about the current state of affairs. Hopefully a renewed focus on grassroots music will help to reinvigorate the industry and restore the balance a bit, allowing this generation of musicians more access into the industry.

Also, collaborating with other artists always makes us feel positive. Our work with Mirari kick-started that whole process. Every time we’re in a room with him, or working with someone new, it gives us energy. Collaborations will be a big part of our debut album.”

Z: Something to look forward to. “In The Studio” means you’ve come a long way already from starting out. Where did you first begin to learn music and who were your early influences?

“We all came to play music in bands at different times in life, though we've all been engaged/obsessed with it since childhood.

Growing up pre-digital meant our tastes were largely based on what we were exposed to and who showed us what. What brought us together, in terms of influences, were bands with interesting approaches.

We love the way Red Hot Chili Peppers write their songs together in the room and every member has a strong voice in the music. All of our songs are written this way, rather than relying on a principal songwriter.

Equally, bands like Manic Street Preachers who had a ridiculous sense of purpose and vision, or acts like Pet Shop Boys who were bold in bringing their authentic selves into their music.”

Z: Personal opinion is that there’s much extra going on that’s worth keeping a keen ear on. The afore mentioned debut EP - Live At Rockfield - was an unconventional exercise in cohesive audiofusion. What's All Happening In Your World, next?

“We've recorded about 75% of our debut album now and are excited to get into the mixing process and eventually put the album into the world. It's 11 new tracks which no-one has heard before so we're intrigued how people will respond to them. The project is ambitious, with a  bigger scope of sounds and genres than anything we've worked on before. We want to surprise people with our creativity and the direction we've gone in. It's packed full of melody and showcases a lot of the different styles we play with. It's been an intense process and we're hoping it will all be worth the while when it comes to the release.”

It sounds like there a big chance that these recordings will be more than worth it. The new Small Miracles songs are being received warmly at gigs, too.

Small Miracles are a thread of TheZineUK doc weaving an arts and tech tapestry. They recently gigged with CroCroLand faves Murder Club, Jemma Freeman and The Cosmic Something and another, Emily Magpie, mastered all but the first of their releases. Not being nostalgic but Small Miracles evoke the thought that there used to be The Old Grey Whistle Test on TV for such artists with ideas.

About to support more of our faves, Masca, in Cardiff, Small Miracles will also play Rebel Fest at Newport’s Tiny Rebel Brewery on 19th July.
